Privacy
Your words stay with you.
Effective and last updated:
This policy covers the public version 1 of Foldtype, developed by Tevong You, and this website. For privacy questions or requests, email foldtypesupport@gmail.com.
Your writing is local
Documents, notes and writing history are stored on your device.
No tracking
The public app has no advertising, analytics tracking or Penpals account.
Purchases through Apple
Apple handles payments. Foldtype checks unlocks on your device.
What the app collects
Foldtype’s public v1 app does not collect your documents, account information, contact details or device identifiers. It has no advertising or analytics tracking. There is no Foldtype account to create or sign in to for writing, and your documents are not uploaded to a developer-run server.
Your writing, annotations, highlights, document history, folders and preferences are stored on your device. Writing history supports playback of your work. Correction fluid covers typed marks; it does not remove the original typing from the document.
If you protect a folder with a PIN, its PIN credentials are held in the device Keychain. They are not sent to the developer. Keychain items can persist independently of app removal.
Backups and other devices
Your device’s backup settings may include Foldtype’s app data. A device backup, or a copy you place in iCloud Drive or another storage service, is handled under that provider’s terms. Foldtype does not automatically sync your document library between devices.
App Store purchases and the trial
Optional New Sheets, typewriter and marking-tool purchases are processed by Apple’s App Store. Foldtype checks Apple-signed transactions on your device to unlock purchases and restore them. It does not receive your payment card details or send purchase records to a developer-run server.
The optional 7-day Pen & Highlighter trial uses the original date of a free trial transaction to determine when access ends. It does not charge automatically. Restoring that transaction does not restart the trial.
Apple processes purchase and Apple Account information under Apple’s privacy policy. Purchase records held by Apple are separate from the writing stored by Foldtype.
Exporting, sharing and recording
Your documents stay on your device unless you choose to export or share them. When you select an app, person, printer or storage service in the system share sheet, the content you choose is passed to that destination. Its handling of the copy is governed by its own policies and your settings.
Read in Foldleaf / Send to Foldleaf. This creates an exported PDF in an on-device shared folder accessible to Foldleaf Reader. Foldleaf imports and manages its own copy. A shared PDF may remain in that folder until the receiving app handles it. Removing the original Foldtype document does not remove another app’s copy.
Writing videos. If you choose to record playback, the recording captures the app’s writing animation and sound locally. Recording or saving a writing video uses your photo library only when you choose to save it. Saving or sharing the result is your choice.
Opening an external link, including an App Store page or a credit in About & Licences, opens another website or app. That destination’s privacy policy applies to information you provide there.
Foldtype Penpals
Penpals accounts and correspondence are not available in public v1. The Coming soon screen does not collect email addresses or other signup details, create a mailbox account or send letters. A policy describing the service’s data handling will be provided before Penpals becomes available.
Retention and deletion
- Writing and history: kept locally until you remove them. Throwing away a document moves it to the Bin. Bin items become eligible for automatic deletion after 30 days; the app removes expired items when it loads the library. Use Put Back before then to restore a document, or Empty Bin / permanent Delete to remove its local document and history sooner.
- App data: deleting the app removes its local app data, subject to system backups. Offloading an app is different from deleting it and may retain its documents.
- PIN credentials: Keychain items may remain after app removal. Manage a folder’s PIN through the app’s folder PIN controls while you have access.
- Separate copies: exported files, shared PDFs, saved videos and backups must be managed separately in Files, Photos, the receiving app or your backup service.
- Apple purchase records: handled and retained by Apple under its own policy; deleting Foldtype does not delete your App Store purchase history.
The developer has no server copy of your local writing and cannot recover or delete it remotely. Because the public v1 app has no Foldtype account, there is no account-deletion process to complete.
When you contact support
If you email support, the developer receives your email address and whatever you choose to include, such as your name, device details, screenshots or an example document. This information is used to answer your request, investigate the problem and manage related follow-up. It is not collected automatically from the app or used for advertising.
Support correspondence is handled through the developer’s email provider, Gmail, under Google’s privacy policy. Messages and attachments are retained only as long as needed to handle the request and related follow-up, or meet applicable legal obligations. They are not sold or shared for marketing.
You can ask for access to, correction of or deletion of support information by emailing the address below. You can also withdraw permission for further use of a voluntarily supplied document. Information may need to be retained where required by law. Your locally stored writing is not affected by a support-data request.
Your choices
Exporting, sharing, recording and contacting support are optional. You can decline or change a system permission in your device settings. You can continue ordinary writing without creating an account, joining a waitlist or sending a document to support.
This website
This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes, including when visitors are not signed in. GitHub’s handling and retention of hosting information are described in its privacy statement.
The site does not add advertising trackers, analytics scripts or tracking cookies. Fonts, images and animation videos are served as site files. There is no website signup form or email waitlist.
Changes to this policy
Changes will be published on this page with a revised date. If a future version adds online account or correspondence features, its data handling will be described before those features become available. The public v1 app also includes its privacy policy in Settings → About & Licences.
