Getting started

Foldtype is a typewriting app for iPhone Duo, iPhone and iPad, requiring iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later. Apple Pencil features require a supported iPad and compatible Pencil.

Tap a document on Home to open it. Your writing saves as you go. The in-app guide explains the machine, keyboards, page controls, annotations and exports. Find the guide among your documents; Settings → Show Welcome Guide opens the short welcome introduction.

Purchases and the free trial

What is included, and what can I unlock?

Foldtype is free to download. You can try Your first sheet and the included documents with the Black Ashford Regent typewriter.

New Sheets is a permanent unlock for creating new documents and duplicating existing ones. It is not a pack of pages. You can keep reading, typing in and sharing your existing documents without this unlock.

Other typewriters have separate permanent unlocks. Pen & Highlighter unlocks both marking tools. These are one-time purchases, not subscriptions. Prices are shown in the app in your App Store currency before you confirm.

How does the 7-day Pen & Highlighter trial work?

Where available, choose Start 7-day free trial in the marking-tools purchase screen. The trial runs for seven days from the original free trial transaction. Restoring purchases or reinstalling the app does not restart it.

There is no automatic charge and no subscription to cancel. When the trial ends, drawing, highlighting, erasing and note undo/redo require the permanent Pen & Highlighter unlock. Existing notes and highlights remain available to read and share.

How do I restore a purchase on another device?

Use the same Apple Account for App Store purchases, then open Settings → Purchases & Restore → Restore Purchases in Foldtype. Restore Purchases is also available in an unlock screen. An internet connection is needed to check with Apple.

Restoring an unlock does not restore your documents: writing is stored separately on each device. Keep a backup of your work.

A purchase is unavailable or has not unlocked.

Check your internet connection and App Store sign-in, then use Try again on the purchase screen or Restore Purchases. If Apple is awaiting purchase approval, the unlock becomes available after the transaction is confirmed.

If it still does not work, email support with the name of the unlock, the message displayed, your device and the app version. You do not need to delete the app to report a purchase problem.

How do I request a refund?

Apple handles App Store billing and refund requests. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com or follow Apple’s refund instructions. Eligibility and decisions are handled by Apple.

Your writing and documents

Where is my writing saved? Does it sync?

Foldtype saves writing, notes, highlights, folders and writing history locally on your device. It does not automatically sync your library between devices.

In Files, look under On My iPhone → Foldtype or On My iPad → Foldtype. Copy the whole Foldtype folder to a safe location for a backup of your documents and writing history. Your device’s own backup settings may also include app data.

A PDF export is useful for reading elsewhere, but is not a complete backup of an editable Foldtype document and its writing history.

I deleted a document by mistake.

Open the Bin on Home, then use Put Back to restore the document. Thrown-away documents are kept there for 30 days before they become eligible for automatic deletion.

Empty Bin or a permanent Delete removes a document and its local writing history. The developer has no server copy to recover; a separate backup or exported copy may still be available.

Why can’t I delete, copy or paste typed text?

Foldtype works like a manual typewriter. Del or Backspace steps back and covers a letter with correction fluid so you can type over it. The original mark stays underneath. The arrow keys move your view of the paper, not an editing cursor.

You can export typed words as Plain Text or Markdown if you want to edit them in another app. Notes made with the pen have their own erasers and undo controls.

How do I export, print or read a document in Foldleaf?

Touch and hold a document on Home and choose Export, or use Share in the annotation view. PDF (scanned look) preserves the paper and typewriter appearance; PDF (clean) uses selectable text. Both include notes. You can also export Page Images, Plain Text or Markdown.

Plain Text and Markdown do not include handwritten notes or highlights. Choose PDF or page images when those marks matter. Use Print for AirPrint, or Read in Foldleaf / Send to Foldleaf to pass a PDF to Foldleaf Reader.

Can I use Apple Pencil, my finger or a physical keyboard?

On a supported iPad, Apple Pencil can mark the page. Open Read & Annotate for the full pen and highlighter controls. Marking requires the Pen & Highlighter unlock or an active free trial.

In the annotation view, turn off Apple Pencil Only to draw with a finger; use two fingers to move the page. Keyboard choices are under Settings → Keyboard. You can use the typewriter keys, iOS keyboard or a physical keyboard.

How do I record the writing animation?

Touch and hold a document on Home and choose Play Back Writing. Use the recording button during playback and follow the system prompt. When recording ends, choose a framing option and save or share the video.

The recording stays on the device until you choose to save or share it. Finish and export the recording before leaving the typewriter.

Is Foldtype Penpals available?

Not in public version 1. The Penpals area is a coming-soon announcement. It does not create an account, send letters or collect email addresses for a waitlist. Details and an updated privacy policy will be provided before the service becomes available.
