Privacy
Foldleaf Reader collects no personal data. Here is what it keeps on your device, what it connects to, and why.
Nothing collected
No account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking.
On your device
Your books and notes stay with you. The developer never sees them.
Only what you ask
The app goes online only to fetch what you open or save.
In effect from 1 October 2026, last updated 3 October 2026.
What is collected
Nothing about you. There is no account, no sign-in and no profile. The app contains no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind, and no third-party SDK that reports on how it is used. The developer receives no information about you or about how you use the app.
Your books and your annotations
Documents you import are copied into the app’s own storage on your device. Highlights, Pencil drawings, bookmarks, reading positions and folder names are stored there alongside them. The developer does not receive them and has no way to see them.
A PDF you open with Edit in Place stays where it is, in Files: the app keeps a link to it, and writes your annotations into the file itself when you tap Save. If that file is in iCloud Drive or another provider’s storage, it is kept and synced there under that provider’s terms, as it would be for any other app.
Whatever you use to back up your device — iCloud Backup or a computer — will include the app’s data, as it does for any app. That backup is governed by Apple’s terms, not by this policy.
Network connections
The app contacts no server run by the developer. Reading needs no connection at all. The app does reach the internet in these cases, each of them something you asked for:
- The arXiv, Project Gutenberg and Web browsers load the sites you open in them — arxiv.org, gutenberg.org, and whatever you visit from the Web browser — and download the files you save. Those sites see the requests as they would from any browser, under their own privacy policies, and may keep cookies, which the app stores on your device.
- Two examples, if you want them. On a new library’s first launch the app asks whether to download an example paper from arxiv.org and an example book from gutenberg.org. Only if you say yes does it fetch them, as the browsers would.
- Naming an arXiv paper. When a paper is saved with renaming switched on, the app asks arXiv’s public API for that paper’s title and authors, sending only the paper’s identifier.
- A book’s own contents may refer to something hosted elsewhere, such as an image, which your device may then fetch; and tapping a link in a document may open it in your browser.
Crash reports
If you have turned on Share with App Developers in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements, Apple may send the developer crash logs and performance data for this app. Apple collects and delivers these; they arrive without anything identifying you, and they are used only to fix faults. Turning that setting off stops them, and the app behaves no differently either way.
Purchases and the free trial
Any purchase is handled by Apple. The App Store tells the app only whether a purchase exists, and when the free trial began; no payment details, card numbers or billing addresses reach the app or the developer at any point.
So that the trial and page curl’s own 14 days are counted fairly, the app keeps on your device the dates they began, including in the device’s keychain. These dates never leave your device.
Children
The app is not directed at children, and since it collects no personal data, it collects none from them either.
Your rights
Data-protection rights — access, correction, erasure — concern data held about you. The developer holds none. What the app stores is on your own device, and deleting the app removes it; files you edited in place stay where they are in Files, yours to keep or delete.
Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version appears here with a new date. A version of the app that stored your library anywhere other than your device — syncing it between your own devices, for example — or that collected anything about you, would say so in the app itself before you used it, and this page would say where that data is kept and who can see it.
